MODULE 2: The Research Process:
Section 6 of 6, CONCLUSION/PREVIEW, page 1 of 1.

CONCLUSION/PREVIEW

"A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step."

—Lao-tzu

This module provided some foundational principles to help guide you in the creation of a research paper or other scholarly work. Now it is time to see how to actually get the materials you need to do just that.

Modules 3 through 6 of this tutorial provide instruction on the use of resources of the Troy University Library.

You will see demonstrations of information search tools and will be introduced to research techniques that can help you to use them effectively.

Along the way you will see how to print, save, and e-mail information sources, and will learn how to record the data needed in order to document these sources properly .

END OF SECTION: CONCLUSION/PREVIEW

P.S.

To help familiarize you with the elements necessary to document sources, this tutorial provides numerous real life examples. The following three references pertain to the quote from Lao-tzu at the top of this page. The references are, respectively, shown in MLA and APA styles.

Bartlett, John. Familiar Quotations. Ed. Emily Morison

Beck. 15th ed. Boston: Little Brown, 1980.

Bartlett, J. (1980). Familiar quotations (15th ed).

     (E. M. Beck, Ed.). Boston: Little Brown.

Remember, the reference is the long documentation entry. The short, in-text entry, is the citation.

Example citations, presented MLA style:

As the Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu stated, "A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step" (Bartlett 65).

Just as Lao-tzu's "journey of a thousand miles" (Bartlett 65) began with a single step, so too did this author's investigation into how to use library resources.
