From 2008 to 2010, Dr. Alagan was employed as a visiting professor at the Department of Global Gender Studies, University at Buffalo (SUNY). From 2015 to now, Dr. Alagan works as an adjunct faculty member at Troy University. He also holds the designation of Associate Professor at Alabama State University in Geography. In addition to teaching world regional geography classes at Troy, he also taught courses in Geographic Information Systems, Demography, Ethnography, Gender and Disaster Management, Labor, and Environment in the Global Economy, and Environmental Impact Assessment.
Dr. Alagan's current research interests include Participatory GIS, Environmental Justice, Black Belt Social Struggles, Civil Rights GIS, and Disaster Management. Over the course of his academic career in the US and Sri Lanka, he has published his research findings in national and international journals. During the last five years, Dr. Alagan also engaged in community service activities as head coach for under 15 and 18 youth soccer in City of Prattville, Alabama.
